Parents' Guide to Child Modeling
Everything you should know about professional photos, self-tape auditions, your role as a parent and what to expect before your child begins.
Everything you need to know before applying.
We know this may be new for your family
If you have ever wondered whether modeling or acting could be a good fit for your child, you are not alone. Parents often come to us with questions about experience, photos, auditions, schedules and what happens after joining an agency.
This guide was created to give families honest, practical information before submitting an application. Child modeling can be exciting, but it also requires preparation, flexibility, patience and a child who genuinely wants to participate.
Before you apply: Take a few minutes to read this page with your child. The goal is not to pressure them, but to make sure they understand that modeling and acting may include photos, practice, video auditions and following directions.
Experience is not required. Interest is.
Children do not need previous modeling or acting experience to apply. Many successful young talent begin with no professional background at all.
What matters is that your child has a genuine desire to shine in front of the camera, is willing to participate and can make a reasonable effort to listen and follow age-appropriate directions. A child does not have to be the loudest person in the room. Confidence can grow with practice and experience.
Your child should be comfortable enough to engage with a camera without being forced.
Young children may be asked to smile, turn, repeat a line or show a specific reaction.
Short, relaxed practice sessions at home can make future auditions feel familiar.
From registration to a live agency profile
The timeline depends largely on how quickly your family completes the photo process and submits the materials needed for your child's profile.
Complete registration
Selected families receive the agreement, requirements and next-step instructions by email.
Prepare professional photos
If your child does not already have approved photos, you have up to 60 days to complete the portfolio.
Submit images for review
You may use a photographer we recommend or choose your own professional fashion photographer.
Profile goes live
Once approved photos are submitted, our website team generally publishes the profile within 48 hours.
Your child does not need a portfolio before signing
Professional photos are not required for the initial application. If your child is accepted and already has professional images, you may submit them to us for review.
If your child does not have suitable photos, that is completely okay. We can connect your family with a professional fashion photographer who understands the images needed for modeling and acting submissions. You may also choose your own photographer.
After registration, families have up to 60 days to complete and submit the required portfolio. Once approved photographs are received, the website profile is normally completed within approximately 48 hours.
Parent tip: Choose a photographer who knows how to photograph children for commercial and fashion use. Beautiful family portraits are not always the same as effective agency portfolio images.
Most auditions now happen at home
Approximately 95% of auditions are now submitted from home using a cell phone. Even children as young as four may be asked to complete a short video audition, including for some print opportunities.
A self-tape does not need expensive equipment, but it should be steady, well lit, easy to hear and recorded exactly according to the casting instructions.
Use a tripod
A basic phone tripod keeps the picture steady and allows your child's full body to remain in frame.
Find clean light
Face a window or use even lighting. Avoid strong light directly behind your child.
Choose a simple background
A quiet, uncluttered wall keeps the attention on your child.
Practice before it is urgent
Short practice videos help children feel natural when a real audition arrives.
Parents are part of the professional team
Young talent depend on parents and guardians to manage communication, schedules, transportation, paperwork and preparation. Your organization and reliability can directly affect whether an opportunity can be pursued.
- Check agency emails regularly and respond by the stated deadline.
- Keep photos, measurements, sizes and contact information current.
- Read every audition instruction before recording.
- Help your child practice without over-coaching or creating pressure.
- Be prepared for auditions that arrive with short notice.
- Make sure your child continues to enjoy the experience.

Child modeling myths, explained
"My child needs experience before applying."
No. Beginners are welcome. Interest, preparation, personality and the ability to follow directions are more important at the application stage.
"We need expensive photos before we can sign."
No. Existing professional photos may be reviewed, or the portfolio can be completed after registration within the required 60-day period.
"Every child on an agency website gets frequent auditions."
Opportunities depend on the exact needs of each client, including age, appearance, location, sizes, skills and availability.
"A great audition guarantees a booking."
No agency can guarantee a job. The client or casting team makes the final decision, sometimes based on factors outside the talent's control.

What if my child is shy?
A naturally quiet child may still do well. What matters is whether the child is willing to engage, practice and become comfortable in front of a camera. Children should never be forced to participate.
Do we need professional photos to apply?
